Initially settling in Canada, she later moved to Illinois in 1987 with a mission to establish herself as a “Painter of Ireland.”

Mary Mcsweeney and a host of Irish and Irish-Americans were honored at the 2018 iBam Awards in Chicago with the Killarney native being honored for visual arts.

The Gala Arts Award dinner, which takes place annually in Chicago, also honored Fionnula Flanagan for the performing arts, Maura O’Connell for music, Mike Leonard for media/journalism, and Marian Keys for literature. Previous winners include Robert Ballagh, Brendan Gleeson, Tim Pat Coogan, Stephen Ray, Phil Coulter, Maeve Binchy, Gabriel Byrne, and Frank McCourt.
