The combination of everyday scenes and the realist interpretations run the risk of becoming documentary. Mary overcomes this risk by painting people she knows and places she often visited in her youth. Her mothers childhood home, now vacant, her elderly cousin Con Foley going to work in the fields, memories of staying with her Aunt Nora & Uncle Phil, running up and down that same bog road, “the bushes and trees have overgrown the Foley house now, so my memories were an integral part of this painting”
